On the 110th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, the Oatley RSL Sub-Branch was deeply honoured to host this year’s ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Oatley Memorial Gardens.
It was a privilege to see our local community come together in such strong numbers to pay their respects. With over 5,000 people in attendance, this year’s service was one of the largest seen in the area for many years — a true reflection of the pride, respect, and gratitude that lives on in Oatley.
Following the Dawn Service, we held our first ever ANZAC Day Family Event at Oatley Memorial Gardens. Once again, the community turned out in force, with more than 5,000 people walking through the grounds, exploring interactive displays, activities, and taking part in a meaningful day of remembrance and family connection.
A highlight of the day was the spectacular flypast by the DC3 Dakota and DHC4 Caribou, courtesy of the Heritage Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS). Unfortunately, due to air traffic control restrictions, they were only able to complete one pass — but it was a memorable moment that added a powerful visual tribute to the day.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made the day possible:

What an incredible day out on the water, members of the Oatley Sub-Branch had with Saltwater Veterans!
Members of the Oatley RSL Sub-Branch, along with our Directors, had the absolute pleasure of attending the annual Saltwater Veterans ANZAC Sailing Event at the beautiful Manly Yacht Club. With over 120 veterans coming together from all walks of life, the day was nothing short of fantastic!
From eager first-timers learning the ropes to seasoned sailors sharing their knowledge and love for the sport, the energy was contagious. The camaraderie, laughter, and sheer joy of sailing made for an unforgettable experience for veterans of all ages and abilities.
The day was filled with excitement from the get go with a visit from NSW Police Marine Area Command and POLAIR to help pay tribute to our service men and women of the ADF.
Following a sombre Anzac Service, attendees jumped to their boats for a full day of sailing followed by an amazing BBQ lunch and many laughs.
We extend our immense thanks and gratitude to Scott and Jen Reynolds from Saltwater Veterans for their tireless efforts in running this amazing charity and continuing to provide such meaningful and well-organised events. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and we are so grateful to be part of your journey.
A heartfelt thank you to the Manly Yacht Club, all the event sponsors, the incredible volunteers, and the generous yacht owners who opened their vessels and hearts to our veteran community. Your contributions made the day smooth sailing from start to finish.
We’ll absolutely be back next year—already counting down the days and we hope we can get more members attending next years event!
The Oatley RSL Sub-Branch are very close to unveiling our tribute display for Oatley’s own hero, Pilot Officer Frederick Richard John McDowell (Service Number: 403070), a distinguished Spitfire pilot of No. 457 Squadron RAAF during World War II. Born on 4 February 1917 in Waverley, NSW, and later residing in Oatley, McDowell enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on 9 December 1940.
Throughout his service in the Northern Territory, McDowell showcased exceptional bravery, engaging enemy aircraft in defense of our nation. His commitment to protecting Australia from aerial threats exemplifies the courage and dedication of our servicemen.
During his service, PLTOFF McDowell had three unconfirmed kills (Japanese Bombers) and damaged another five aircraft (unconfirmed).
Tragically, on 6 July 1943, McDowell was killed during air operations over the Northern Territory.
McDowell and his 457 SQN wingmen were scrambled to intercept an enemy force approaching Darwin from the west. Departing RAAF Livingstone (South of Darwin) at 1045 hours local in an 11 aircraft scramble, McDowell, number 2 in blue formation (Blue 2) of four aircraft departed Livingstone in the second packet of four. The remainder of the section comprised Blue 1. FO F.D Hamilton, Blue 3. FO N.F. Robinson, Blue 4 FLTSGT R. Watson. FLTSGT Watson returned to base shortly after take off with engine problems and did not witness the engagement.
Interception was made with the enemy aircraft approximately 35 miles East of Anson Bay (NT) at a height of approximately 22,000ft. Blue section dived in to attack from 32,000ft. Following a fierce air battle, McDowell and the remaining men of Blue section were shot down and never seen again by their 457 SQN comrades.
A week after the engagement, PLTOFF McDowells aircraft and body were located and recovered within/close to the Roper River.
He is laid to rest at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made for our country’s freedom.
We honor Pilot Officer McDowell’s legacy, reflecting on his valor and the ultimate sacrifice he made. His story continues to inspire and remind us of the profound debt we owe to those who fought for our nation’s peace and security.
Thank you Fred “Darky” McDowell.
Lest we forget.
